Spent a small bit of time putting together the Mac App Store screenshots for Desk v3.0, which I should finally be able to submit this coming week for review.

It’s been a long time coming and literally a year since the last update has come down the pipe. But, it’s a doozy and it took about a year to get to this place as it’s redesigned and rewritten. I’m excited to get it out and into the community’s hands.

Here are a few of the shots that I’m considering for the 5 that are required for the store:

An entirely new operating system is now available for the Mac and I rewrote the app and redesigned it with macOS’ release in mind.

Reimagined for macOS.

This is probably my favorite screen… and it probably won’t make it into the final five, but, that’s okay. I’ll share it here:

I changed the location of the settings panel and made it much less of a “thing” in the UI/UX. This is mostly because I found that most people, including myself, set it once and then very rarely ever change it once they’ve found and established their preference.

So now it’s in the bottom right corner and out of the way. Set it once and then forget about it.

Write your way, in your own style.

One of the biggest changes and additions is a new way to organize your content locally through groups and tags. What I’ve discovered is that a lot of people use Desk for their own personal writing projects and not all of the content that these folks write is published directly to the blog.

Consequently, a lot of folks use it as a writing “base station” and so I wanted to make sure that these folks had better tools to manage their content locally on their machine and have Desk be their go-to tool for all of their writing and notetaking needs.

Of course, you can still publish when you need to.

New groups, tags, and refined content management controls.

Finally, one of the most significant changes is that Desk is now exclusively a WordPress-centric publishing app and I’ve engineered it in a way (and going forward) that caters specifically for those that use WordPress.

What this means is that if you use Typepad or Movable Type or some of the other platforms then you’ll just have to stick with Desk version 2.0, which will still work of course.

This will make the product systemically better since I get to focus in on one publishing experience instead of many and can design and engineer it with a singularity of focus. This might burn a few folks, but, it became clear to me a long time ago that WordPress was the heavyweight champ in the digital publishing category… for now.

Oh, and for those that love Medium.com…? Don’t worry, I got you fam: mnml app is coming soon. The design will be different than Desk and… well, that’s all I’ll say about that for now. Stay tuned (and subscribe for updates!).

The same text treatments will be found except now they’re designed to be WordPress-centric instead of trying to manage multiple views from different technologies and platforms. For most people it won’t feel any different but a few of you might appreciate a bit of performance clarity.

Text treatments that make sense.

Finally, macOS has a few new built-in features that I want to explore and experiment with and a few newer options and experiences that I still haven’t fully gotten to experience myself.

For instance, the new Touch Bar that Apple has introduced in the new MacBook Pro is something that I’d love to build into Desk… I’m just not sure exactly what and how to do that quite yet. First things first… I need to get one of those new MacBook Pros…

Hey, Christmas is right around the corner!

I’m stoked to have this into your hands soon. More to come soon…!

Install any app with ease.

The Mac App Store revolutionises the way apps are installed on a computer — it happens in one step. Enter the same iTunes password you use to buy apps and music on your iPhone, iPad, Mac or iPod touch. Within seconds, your new app flies to Launchpad, ready to go. So you can spend more time enjoying new apps and less time installing them.

Keep your apps up to date.

Since developers are constantly improving their apps, the Mac App Store keeps track of your apps and tells you when an update is available — including OS X software updates. Update one app at a time or all of them at once, for free. You can even have your apps and OS X update automatically, so you’ll always have the latest version of every app you own.

The app you need. When you need it.

Can’t open a file you’ve downloaded or received in an email? OS X can search the Mac App Store to find the app that can open the file. Buy what you need instantly and get back to business.

Buy, download and even re-download.

You can install apps on every Mac authorised for your personal use, and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own.
