At what was its last -- and aptly titled -- event for the year, Cupertino-based tech giant, Apple, announced 'One more thing' for 2020. At this third big-ticket Apple event in the last three months, the company announced its first Apple Silicon-based MacBooks, and with it also gave birth to a new line-up of Macs that in the future will use the company's in-house ARM-based chipsets, instead of Intel processors that it has been using on current-generation MacBooks and iMacs.

Today's event comes on the back of previous ones where Apple launched new iPads, two Apple Watch models, and the iPhone 12 lineup. However, such was the nature of the announcement made today that this event could go on to have a far greater impact on the company's fortunes going forward than any other event it has held this year.

Apple Silicon M1-based MacBook Air, Mac mini and MacBook Pro: Price and specifications

With today's announcement, Apple has fulfilled its promise of starting the process of migrating its entire line-up of MacBooks and eventually iMacs to custom-built Apple Silicon chips. The first in the series is a 13-inch MacBook Air which will use this new M1 chipset from the Apple Silicon family of SoCs for Macs. The device has been announced to retail at a starting price of Rs 92,900 in India and $999 in the United States.

Much like the other chips for Apple's phones and watches, the M1 will use the company's in-house ARM-based processing cores built using the latest 5nm fabrication process. These chips will replace the Intel processors that have been used on Apple Macs till now.

Apple claims the M1 chip uses up to 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU to achieve 11 trillion operations. The powerful 8-core CPU performs up to 3.5x faster than the previous generation processors and up to 5x faster GPU performance. Interestingly, Apple says the new MacBook Air features the best battery life on a MacBook Air to date, as it promises up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 18 hours of video playback.

The company also launched a new Mac Mini at Rs 64,900 which the company claims is 'far more powerful and far more versatile' than any other Mac mini before. This Mac mini also uses the same M1 chipset being used in Apple's new MacBook Air. The Mac mini supports up to two displays including Apple's Pro Display XDR in full 6K resolution, and Wi-Fi 6 for faster wireless performance and the Secure Enclave in M1 for 'best-in-class' security.

But the company did not just stop at the Mac mini. At the One More Thing event, the company also slipped in a third Apple Silicon M1 chip-based mac in the form of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. The MacBook Pro has been launched at a starting price of Rs 1,22,900 and promises not only better performance than other MacBooks, but also the 'best battery life on a MacBook to date.'

The new MacBook Pro is promised to deliver 'best-in-class' security with the Secure Enclave in M1 and Touch ID. And it features two Thunderbolt ports with USB 4 support to connect to more peripherals than ever, including Apple's Pro Display XDR in full 6K resolution.

The new MacBooks, along with the new Mac mini will be available for purchase in India starting November 17.

What's Apple Silicon M1, and why it makes sense?

Apple claims that the M1 chip is from this new family of Apple SoCs is built on the same architecture that is currently being used for ARM-based chips that run iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads, and other Apple devices. Considering that these chips have constantly been great for Apple, both in terms of marketing, and actual real-world performance, it makes a whole lot of sense for the Cupertino-based tech giant to now expand the scope of its chip-making operations and start creating processing units for a range of powerful personal computers. Not only does this help create a hardware-based link between all its devices, but it would also help Apple rapidly improve its chip-making division by using the learning from this step.

For the end-user, Apple promises that the use of in-house Apple Silicon M1 chipsets will help the company bring access to technologies such as the Neural Engine to its new Macs. Apple also claims these new chips working in tandem with macOS Big Sur will 'give these Macs industry-leading battery performance per watt all while ensuring higher processing performance than before. During its presentation, Apple especially stressed the gains in GPU performance that it will derive from using the new Apple Silicon chips, which it claims will now enable app developers to write even more powerful pro apps and high-end games for the MacBooks.

Apart from the improved battery, processing and GPU performance, the M1 chip's storage controller and flash technology also deliver up to 2x faster SSD performance, which Apple claims will massively improve the time spent on previewing massive images or importing large files.
